A Tri-State Confidence Framework for Large Language Models Using Iterative Validation and Penalized Scoring

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in natural language understanding and generation. However, a significant limitation is their propensity to "hallucinate" or confabulate, generating factually incorrect or nonsensical information with high confidence. This paper proposes a novel training and validation framework designed to mitigate this issue by introducing a third, "uncertain" state into the model's response mechanism. By training an existing LLM on data in discrete chunks and applying a ternary scoring system (+1 for correct, 0 for uncertain, -1 for incorrect) during validation, we can incentivize the model to explicitly signal when it lacks sufficient information. This approach aims to create a more reliable and trustworthy AI that understands its own knowledge boundaries. We also briefly speculate on the potential efficiencies of implementing such a probabilistic system within a quantum computing paradigm.
