The Illusion of Liberty: When Individual Rights Become Communitarian Grants

Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Liberal democracies rest upon a contradiction they rarely confront: they proclaim liberty as individual, yet define it collectively. The so-called “rights of man” are written not by men in isolation but by societies seeking harmony among competing wills. Thus, liberty— codified, limited, and shared— becomes not a natural inheritance but a negotiated truce. This paper challenges the authenticity of individual rights, arguing that what we call freedom is not an absolute possession of the self but a communitarian concession dressed in individualist vocabulary.
