Memory and Motivation in Language Revitalization Practice: a Critical Analysis
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article presents a critical analysis of Taylor-Adams' (2024) study on the relationship between collective memory and motivation in language revitalization practice. Through examination of 28 practitioners from eight language communities, the original study demonstrates how shared community histories—including historical trauma and ancestral connections—profoundly shape individual L2 learning motivations. This analysis evaluates the study's theoretical contributions, methodological strengths, and limitations, particularly regarding generalizability and cross-cultural applicability. While acknowledging constraints in sample scope and comparative analysis, this review affirms the study's significance in challenging future-oriented L2 motivation paradigms and advancing ethical research practices with Indigenous communities.
