Antibiotic Resistance and Artificial Intelligence: A Research Experiment of Creating Antimicrobial Peptides

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The discovery and use of antibiotics in the early twentieth century was a medical breakthrough that reduced the fear of infectious diseases and allowed for procedures such as open-heart surgery and organ transplants. However, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics gave way to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). When microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses, undergo the evolutionary process, they can develop mechanisms to break down and resist antibiotics that are encountered. Within a short time of developing new antibiotics, scientists find resistant organisms. It is predicted that by 2050, without any preventative measures, AMR will be the leading cause of mortality, posing a threat to public health, animal healthcare, and agricultural systems (Ahmed et al., 2024; Mohr, 2016). In response to this threat, scientists have begun investigating alternative antimicrobial substances.
