Electro‑Bio Upgrading of Heavy Crude via Magnetized Pollen, Charged Dust, and Reservoir‑Native Microbes
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: We propose a low‑temperature, electro‑bio pathway to convert surplus heavy crude (e.g., in Iraq) into clean energy streams and value‑added metabolites while targeting near‑zero emissions. The concept couples four elements that naturally co‑exist around petroleum reservoirs: (1) pollen grains magnetized with Fe₃O₄ acting simultaneously as lipid sponges and micro‑conductors; (2) charged mineral dust (Fe/Si‑rich) and venturi‑induced triboelectric pulses (δV) that modulate interfaces and emulsion/wettability, indirectly easing enzymatic/microbial access at ≤ 80 °C; (3) a reservoir‑native microbial consortium enriched for iron/silica tolerance that redirects electron flow to hydrogen rather than H₂S; and (4) a microbial fuel cell (MFC) + solid‑oxide fuel cell (SOFC) chain that harvests electrons and heat without combustion. Bench program (20 L reactor, heavy Iraqi crude) defines baseline and stretch goals (see Appendix A) rather than fixed targets; performance is evaluated via phased KPIs. An integrated Zero‑Leak architecture routes VOC/CH₄ into bio‑conversion, fixes sulfur as FeS(s), re‑uses all process heat, and filters residual exhaust to below EU limits. We outline mechanisms, a bench protocol, safety/ethics, LCA sketch, and a TRL‑3→4 roadmap.
