Idiopathic intracranial hypertension with bilateral sixth-nerve palsy: A case report
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) has predominantly been known to affect obese women of childbearing age. However, occasionally, it can affect the pediatric population with a distinctive clinical profile, but it is exceedingly rare in infants and neonates. We discuss a unique case of an infant who presented with bilateral sixth-nerve palsy and papilledema, with an otherwise unremarkable neurological examination. Papilledema, the hallmark of IIH, is a preventable cause of blindness in children and hence warrants a high index of suspicion to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment. In this report, we outline the diagnostic and management process in suspected cases of IIH in the pediatric population.
