Abstract: ABSTRACT: An Ecological study was conducted in Buna and Mechancho Woodland Vegetation of Boloso Bombe District, Wolaita Zone, SNNPRS, Ethiopia. The objective of the present study was to investigate the floristic composition and vegetation structure of Buna and Mechancho Woodland. Systematic sampling method was used to collect data from sixty plots of 30 m x 30 m (900 m2) for trees, 5m x 5m (25 m2) for shrubs and 1m x 1m (1m2) for herbs and for assessment of regeneration status of woody species, number of seedlings and saplings of each species were counted and recorded in five 2 m x 2m (4 m2) subplots at the four corners and one at the center of the large quadrat. The representative sampling sites of Buna and Mechancho woodland was selected and at each sites, three line transects was laid at 500 m apart and plots of size 30 m x30 m was established systematically at every 200m interval along these line transects following altitudinal gradient at appropriate direction. Agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis was performed using similarity ratio in R software. Shannon - Wiener Diversity Index was used to calculate species diversity and evenness whereas Soresen’s Similarity ratio was used to measure similarity between the plant community types. A total of 112 plant species were recorded from Buna and Mechancho woodland Vegetation in Boloso Bombe District. The identified species were belonged to 42 families and 94 genera. Similarly, the results from analyzed data showed the most species rich families were Fabaceae. Tree occupied the highest proportion followed by shrubs and herbs while climbers, lianas and trees/shrubs scored the least proportion in the study area. The output of plant community analysis showed three plant community types (Syzygium guineense- Combretum molle, Combretum molle – Terminalia stenostachya and Terminalia laxiflora - Combretum hereroense). Community I had the highest diversity followed by community II and the lowest diversity for community III. Communities I and II had the highest similarity ratio which is 0.94. The total density of woody species with DBH greater than 2cm in the Buna and Mechancho woodlands was 442 Ind/ha. The total basal area of the woody species in buna and mechancho woodlands was 47.7 m2/ha. Analysis of regeneration of some species with no seedling and no sapling showed under lower regeneration status which calls for the need of serious attention for conservation and management.
