Guidelines for visual synapse characterisation for PV experts

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This document provides standardized experimental guidelines for the characterization of optoelectronic artificial synapses within the SOLIS project. It outlines reproducible measurement protocols for key plasticity phenomena such as short-term and long-term potentiation/depression (STP, LTP, LTD), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP), and conductance retention. The procedures are tailored for photomemristive and photoferroelectric thin-film devices based on chalcogenide and oxide semiconductors, combining optical and electrical stimuli. Each section includes detailed timing, measurement, and data-analysis recommendations to ensure cross-laboratory comparability. The document emphasizes analog rather than binary interpretations of synaptic weight evolution, reflecting trap-mediated charge dynamics as the governing physical mechanism.
