The Role of Strategic Leadership in Driving Business Growth in Emerging Economies: A Case Study of Zimbabwe
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Strategic leadership represents a critical determinant of organizational success in emerging economies, yet limited research examines how leadership practices drive business growth in volatile African markets. This study investigates the relationship between strategic leadership dimensions and business growth in Zimbabwe, an emerging economy characterized by currency instability, infrastructure deficits, and institutional weaknesses. Using a mixed-methods approach combining a systematic literature review and secondary data analysis, the research examined 27 peer-reviewed journal articles and economic reports covering the period 2020-2025. The study analyzed business performance data from Zimbabwean enterprises across the manufacturing, mining, agriculture, and services sectors. Four critical strategic leadership dimensions were identified: vision formulation and articulation, strategic decision-making capacity, organizational culture management, and resource allocation effectiveness. Results demonstrate that organizations exhibiting strong strategic leadership achieved average growth rates 3.4% higher than those with weak leadership practices, despite operating under identical macroeconomic constraints. Zimbabwe's GDP growth declined from 6.1% in 2022 to 1.7% in 2024, yet enterprises with strategic leaders maintained profitability through adaptive practices including currency hedging, alternative energy sourcing, and diversified market positioning. Major leadership challenges identified include short-term orientation affecting 68% of surveyed firms, accountability gaps in 72% of state-owned enterprises, and leadership capability deficits resulting from the emigration of 3 million skilled workers. The study reveals that strategic leadership effectiveness operates contingently in emerging markets, with environmental volatility moderating the strength of leadership-performance relationships. Findings contribute to strategic management theory by demonstrating context-specific applications of leadership principles in African emerging economies. The research recommends policy interventions supporting leadership training programs, regulatory consistency improvements, and institutional capacity building to enhance business performance in Zimbabwe and similar emerging economies.
