Refuting the Dark Star Interpretation of JADES High-Redshift Sources: A Comprehensive Re-analysis
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: We present a comprehensive critical reassessment of the dark star interpretation proposed by Ilie et al. (2025, PNAS) for four high-redshift JWST sources (JADES-GS-z14-0, z14-1, z13-0, z11-0). Through 25 independent diagnostic tests (T1–T25), statistical model comparison (AIC/BIC), control sample analysis, and arXiv-anchored observational constraints, we demonstrate that the dark star hypothesis is neither necessary nor preferred. All four targets are best explained as compact, low-metallicity star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 11–14, consistent with standard astrophysics. The marginal He II λ1640 absorption feature in z14-0 (S/N ∼ 2) does not constitute robust evidence for exotic stellar physics, particularly given the ALMA-confirmed [O III] 88 µm emission indicating active H II regions. Our independent control cohort (GLASS-z12, GN-z11, A2744-z12, MACS1149-JD1, UNCOVER-z12) exhibits equivalent observational properties, reinforcing the conclusion that no dark-matter-powered stellar sources are required. We report a proxy model-preference test (T10) based on two spectral ratios (n=2). Because n = 2, BIC is used only as a heuristic; definitive model selection will come from a full joint fit (spectrum+photometry, covariance) with predictive validation (LOO-CV/WAIC). Under the proxy and our baseline (χ2 gal ≈ 0, kgal = 2), DS models with k ≥ 3 are not preferred.
