The Fetal Skull: Structure, Development, and Clinical Significance
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: A marvel of biological engineering, the fetal skull is specially suited for childbirth and the quick development of the postnatal brain. Its exceptional flexibility permits considerable molding during vaginal delivery, protecting the fragile brain tissue. It is composed of multiple bony plates that are separated by fibrous sutures and fontanelles. The unfused nature of these bones allows for the exponential growth in brain volume after birth. This article discusses the fetal skull's anatomical characteristics, developmental phases, and clinical significance, emphasizing its significance in pediatrics and obstetrics. It investigates common anomalies, the roles of fontanelles and sutures, and the ossification process. For pediatricians to monitor neurological development and obstetricians to evaluate the progression of labor, an understanding of the dynamics of the fetal skull is essential.
