The Morals of Markets in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Description (Abstract) This essay completes The Moral Architecture of Civilization trilogy, integrating moral philosophy, economic ethics, and artificial intelligence governance. It introduces two original theoretical constructs—Moral Capital (trust derived from conscience) and Own Morality (contextual ethical reasoning grounded in transparency and empathy)—as frameworks for ethical systems design in AI-regulated markets. Drawing on the works of Adam Smith, Karl Polanyi, Amartya Sen, and Martha Nussbaum, alongside insights from Jewish moral anthropology (b’tzelem adam, yetzer hatov / yetzer hara), the essay argues for a moral-economic synthesis in which technology governance must serve the conscience, not merely compliance. The paper also advances the concept of a dual-AI architecture, pairing regulatory and ethical systems in dynamic oversight. The model remains theoretical but points toward future empirical validation in regulatory sandbox environments. Building upon Fear and Freedom (psychological foundations) and the EICFF Policy Framework (governance application), this essay offers a culminating reflection on conscience as the ultimate regulator in the age of intelligent systems.
