Ricci Flow on G2-Manifolds and the Anomaly of Associative Submanifold Deformation

Abstract: This paper investigates the dynamics of calibrated submanifolds within 7-dimensional manifolds endowed with a G2-structure under the influence of the Ricci flow. Specifically, we focus on the evolution of associative 3-dimensional submanifolds, which are volume-minimizing in their homology class for a fixed, torsion-free G2-structure. The Ricci flow, in general, does not preserve the torsion-free condition, inducing a dynamic background where the calibration condition evolves. We derive the precise evolution equation for the volume form of an initially associative submanifold. Our central result is the identification of an anomalous term in this equation that depends on the interaction between the Ricci tensor of the ambient manifold and the extrinsic curvature of the submanifold. This term acts as a fundamental obstruction to the stability of the associative calibration condition along the flow. We demonstrate that this anomaly can be interpreted as a geometric source term, potentially driving the submanifold volume away from minimality. Under certain simplifying assumptions on the ambient curvature, we relate the integral of this anomaly over the submanifold to characteristic classes of its normal bundle. This work sheds new light on the interplay between geometric flows and calibrated geometry, highlighting challenges in preserving special geometric structures and suggesting deep connections between analytical and topological properties of G2-manifolds.
