Douglas – Clyde – Arthur Research Series: Final Summary and Continuation

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This final paper concludes the Douglas – Clyde – Arthur Research Series, tracing a continuous tradition of governance, learning, and resilience from the Damnonii of Strathclyde to the global Douglas diaspora. Using verified charter, monastic, and colonial evidence, it links native Gaelic-Cumbric institutions, Roman administrative legacies, druidic intellectual survival, and Arthurian martial ideals to the later rise of the House of Douglas. Figures such as Theobald the Fleming, Freskin de Moravia, Bricius of Moray, and James the Good Douglas illustrate the translation of oral authority into written statecraft. The study follows this continuum through forfeiture, reform, and migration, concluding with the enduring symbolism of the salamander in flames—the lineage’s emblem of survival through every age of upheaval.
