An Optimization Semimetric for Directional Cost Environments: Theoretical Foundations and Geometric Implications
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper introduces and rigorously analyzes a novel optimization semimetric that generalizes traditional distance concepts through combinatorial optimization over weight assignments. Defined as d_OSn(P,Q; a) = min_{σ∈S_n} Σ_{i=1}^n a_{σ(i)} |p_i − q_i|, our function captures essential real-world phenomena where optimal resource allocation leads to mathematically rich structures that may violate the triangle inequality in realistic parameter regimes. We provide a comprehensive treatment of this combinatorial formulation of directional costs, establishing it as a valid semimetric that satisfies non-negativity, identity of indiscernibles, and symmetry while characterizing the conditions under which it violates the triangle inequality. The violation is not a limitation but rather a feature that accurately represents situations where direct paths are suboptimal compared to strategically segmented routes. We characterize the precise conditions under which triangle inequality fails, provide explicit counterexamples, and develop efficient computational algorithms. This work bridges combinatorial optimization with geometric analysis, offering new tools for modeling anisotropic environments in transportation, networking, and resource-constrained systems while maintaining mathematical rigor and computational tractability.
