The Paradox of High IQ: Cognitive Optimization and the Social Mechanism of Mental Stagnation

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper examines the paradox of high intelligence in modern knowledge societies, arguing that the pursuit of cognitive optimization—both individual and algorithmic—has led to systemic forms of mental stagnation. Within environments that reward efficiency, memory, and pattern recognition over adaptive reasoning, individuals and institutions become trapped in informational feedback loops that suppress uncertainty, tension, and creative synthesis. Drawing on tension theory and recent literature on cognitive capitalism and AI standardization, the paper reinterprets intelligence not as a static measure of ability but as an emergent property of equilibrium between intuitive and deliberative cognition (System 1 and System 2). When this equilibrium collapses under optimization pressure, the result is a form of cognitive rigidity observable at both neural and institutional levels—a social analog to dementia in which societies remember everything yet understand little. The analysis situates this cognitive phenomenon within the political economy of knowledge production and proposes a framework for reintroducing “tension” as a vital source of intellectual resilience in algorithmic cultures.
