First Report: Rapid assessment of forest area and volume impacted by the 2025 fires in Aude, France
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Description This repository contains the supplementary materials for the publication in Annals of Forest Science titled: “First Report: Rapid assessment of forest area and volume impacted by the 2025 fires in Aude, France.” The provided data and R code allow users to reproduce all key estimates presented in the article, as well as to generate a burned-area fire mask from publicly accessible satellite imagery. Instructions Unzip First_Report_supplementary_code.zip Open the project Double-click First_Report_supplementary_code.Rproj to launch the project in RStudio (Posit). Reproduce the analysis Run tutorial.R to load the data, import functions, and reproduce the estimates reported in the publication. Explore supporting functions/plots helper_functions.R — contains the core computational functions. relative_efficiency_plot.R — produces a theoretical plot showing the approximate percent reduction in confidence interval length achieved by two-phase model-assisted estimation compared to standard one-phase estimation, as a function of the assisting model’s R^2. Data contents (./data) NormBurnRatioPlusDiff.tif dNBR+ derived from Sentinel 2 data used to create the fire mask NFI_data.csv plots from the French National Forest Inventory (2018–2024) merged with auxiliary info from the canopy height model and 2015 forest mask published by the Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière (IGN). canopy_metrics_bdf_30m.tif canopy height model metrics in the region, derived from stereo photogrammetry and high-density LiDAR
