Hydrated salt gel with high phase change latent heat and spatial adaptability for lithium-ion battery thermal management

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The research developed a hydrated salt gel material with high thermal storage capacity and spatial adaptability to address the high temperature sensitivity of lithium-ion batteries and the current difficulties in encapsulating complex battery modules. This material has the capacity to fill the minute gaps present within complex modules by means of the water absorption and swelling of polymers, thereby achieving an encapsulation effect that is comparable to that of commercial potting compounds. In this study, the thermophysical, mechanical and anti-leakage properties were modulated by regulating the mass ratio of hydrated salt, polymer and nanofiller, and the optimal material ratio was determined. The enthalpy of phase change of the sample is 210.8 J/g, which is excellent for leakage resistance. Utilising a 2C discharge multiplier resulted in a temperature reduction of 6.2 °C in the centre cell when compared to conventional potting compounds. Furthermore, the temperature difference exhibited was of a better performance. This study proposes innovative solutions for the encapsulation of complex battery modules and the development of novel thermal management systems.
