Abstract: Introduction: Low back pain is a major public health problem. It is estimated that 66 to 75% of people will suffer from low back pain at least once in their life. Physical exercise is an essential element in the rehabilitation of low back pain. Pilates method is a discipline particularly appreciated by physiotherapists because it can be adapted to all patient profiles. It is based on fundamental elements such as : concentration, breathing, centering, precision and fluidity of movement. These basic principles could be key tools in the rehabilitation of low back pain.Aim: The aim of this literature review is to determine if Pilates method is effective in reducing pain and improving function, in non-specific chronic low back pain patients.Method: 5 randomized clinical trials were included in this literature review from different databases : Pubmed, PEDro and Cochrane. It brought 560 patients suffering from non-specific chronic low back pain, aged between 18 and 80 years old. The goal was to compare Pilates sessions to a minimal passive intervention. Pain intensity was measured with the visual analog scale or the numeric scale, while functional impotence was measured with Roland-Morris questionnaire or Oswestry Disability Index. Results: Only 2 out of 5 studies present statistical and clinical significance in improving pain. 3 out of 5 studies present statistical significance in the assessment of functional impotence. However, results differ regarding the clinical relevance of Pilates in improving function. These results should be approached with prudence due to the large heterogeneity between randomized controlled trials. Conclusion: Results don’t allow us to affirm the effectiveness of Pilates in the care of non-specific chronic low back pain, due to biases and limitations present in the review. On the other hand, Pilates is a non-harmful technique for patients, it can only bring benefits for them.
