Abstract: This study investigates the need for a structured framework for categorizing Hindi language proficiency into levels comparable to internationally recognized systems such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The paper begins by introducing the historical background of language categorization, highlighting its origins in Europe and its subsequent global adoption in language pedagogy. It then explores the advantages of dividing a language into distinct levels, including enhanced curriculum design, effective learner assessment, and the facilitation of international mobility. The current state of Hindi language teaching is examined with attention to how various institutions in India and abroad have attempted to categorize Hindi learning without a universally accepted standard. Through a comparative analysis with languages that already benefit from frameworks such as the CEFR, the study identifies gaps and inconsistencies in Hindi language instruction.Based on this analysis, a suggested framework is proposed, outlining proficiency levels from beginner to advanced, accompanied by a recommended syllabus addressing grammar, vocabulary, communicative skills, and cultural competence. The paper concludes by underscoring the importance of establishing a standardized system for Hindi that aligns with global practices while preserving the unique features of the language.
