Labwall: A Survey on Configurable Firewall Solution for College Computer Laboratories

Abstract: This survey paper presents Labwall, a centralized firewall and monitoring system designed for educational computer laboratories. Through analysis of several research papers, we identify gaps in cost-effective laboratory management solutions and propose a three-mode system (Normal, Lab, Exam) for controlling internet access and monitoring student activities. Labwall operates entirely over LAN using existing Windows infrastructure and open-source technologies, requiring no additional servers or paid software. The system provides real-time monitoring, dynamic firewall enforcement, and centralized control of 20-30+ student PCs simultaneously. This work offers a practical, affordable solution specifically tailored for resource-constrained educational institutions seeking effective laboratory management capabilities.
