Abstract: Sampling methods for pod borer (Helicoverpa armigera Hub.) larvae were evaluated to identify more efficient alternatives to direct observation, aiming to reduce the time and effort required. The sweep net (35 cm dia.), beating on a counting board (50 ´ 20 cm2 and 20 ´ 39 cm2), beating on a round plastic plate (» 18 cm dia.), and direct observation were compared between 2020 and 2022, inclusive. The experiment was set in a randomized complete block design with five replications. In each sampling date, the number of pod borer larvae were counted in situ and were categorized into three classes. The mean pod borer larvae population density ranged from 2.2 to 135.0 in direct observation, 1.6 to 49.8 in circular board, 2.6 to 35.4 in rectangular board of 39 cm ´ 20 cm, 1.8 to 51.6 in rectangular board of 50 cm ´ 20 cm, and 1.0 to 36.8 in sweep net samplings. There was no significant bias in pod borer larval age among the sampling methods. Direct observation had the lowest sampling variability but had the highest cost of sampling. Therefore, management decision on the pod borer based on direct observation sampling is recommended. However, rapid sampling can be made using a rectangular board of 50 cm ´ 20 cm.
