Abstract: The Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Network. Ventilation with lower tidal volumes as compared with traditional tidal volumes for acute lung injury and the acute respiratory distress syndrome. N Engl J Med2000 May 4; 342 : 1301 –8 [OpenUrl][1][CrossRef][2][PubMed][3][Web of Science][4] QUESTION: In patients with acute lung injury or the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), does mechanical ventilation with lower tidal volumes improve clinical outcomes? Randomised (allocation concealed), unblinded, controlled trial with 28 days of follow up. The trial was stopped after 861 patients were enrolled. 10 university centres in the US. 861 intubated patients (mean age 51 y, 60% men) receiving mechanical ventilation who had an acute decrease in the ratio of partial pressure of arterial oxygen to fraction of inspired oxygen (PaO2:FiO2 ratio) to ≤300 (indicating onset of hypoxemia), bilateral pulmonary infiltrates on a chest radiograph consistent with oedema, … [1]: {openurl}?query=rft.jtitle%253DNew%2BEngland%2BJournal%2Bof%2BMedicine%26rft.stitle%253DNEJM%26rft.aulast%253DThe%2BAcute%2BRespiratory%2BDistress%2BSyndrome%2BNetwork%26rft.auinit1%253D%2B%26rft.volume%253D342%26rft.issue%253D18%26rft.spage%253D1301%26rft.epage%253D1308%26rft.atitle%253DVentilation%2Bwith%2BLower%2BTidal%2BVolumes%2Bas%2BCompared%2Bwith%2BTraditional%2BTidal%2BVolumes%2Bfor%2BAcute%2BLung%2BInjury%2Band%2Bthe%2BAcute%2BRespiratory%2BDistress%2BSyndrome%26rft_id%253Dinfo%253Adoi%252F10.1056%252FNEJM200005043421801%26rft_id%253Dinfo%253Apmid%252F10793162%26rft.genre%253Darticle%26rft_val_fmt%253Dinfo%253Aofi%252Ffmt%253Akev%253Amtx%253Ajournal%26ctx_ver%253DZ39.88-2004%26url_ver%253DZ39.88-2004%26url_ctx_fmt%253Dinfo%253Aofi%252Ffmt%253Akev%253Amtx%253Actx [2]: /lookup/external-ref?access_num=10.1056/NEJM200005043421801&link_type=DOI [3]: /lookup/external-ref?access_num=10793162&link_type=MED&atom=%2Febnurs%2F4%2F1%2F18.atom [4]: /lookup/external-ref?access_num=000086782400001&link_type=ISI
