Feasibility of a Standardised Induction Programme for Home Support Workers in Ireland

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Background Home Support Workers (HSWs) are one of the most rapidly increasing workforces in Ireland and internationally. In Ireland, new HSWs are typically offered local induction programmes by homecare provider organisation. However, these are not transferable between employers and often result in repeated/redundant training. Objectives This study aimed to assess the knowledge and skills required by HSWs, review existing induction programme content, and explore the feasibility of and curricular content for a standardised National Induction Programme (NIP) for all HSWs in Ireland. The study was conducted between August 2023 and May 2024. Online surveys and semi-structured interviews/focus groups with Key Stakeholders (KS), Induction Programme Providers (IPP) and HSWs were conducted. The study explored whether a standardised programme is feasible and how it could be implemented. Results A total of 38 KS, 11 IPP and 18 HSWs participated in the online surveys. Eight KS took part in one-to-one interviews/focus groups. All (100%) KS and 91% of IPP agreed that a NIP with standardised content is feasible for HSWs working across all private and public sector settings. The majority of participants felt that a NIP with standardised content should be mandatory for HSWs, including existing employees. A blended use of online and in-person training was recommended. The main themes emerging from the one-to-one interviews/focus groups included agreement on the feasibility of, necessity for and benefits that a NIP would bring. Key areas for the curricular content were proposed. Conclusions This research shows that a single NIP is feasible and important for HSWs in Ireland to raise standards and consistency of care delivery and raise the profile and level of professionalism of HSWs. Lessons learned are relevant internationally for countries aiming to strengthen their homecare workforce and address inconsistencies in training. Key messages • A single National Induction Programme is feasible and essential to standardise training and raise professionalism among Home Support Workers in Ireland. • A blended learning approach - online theory plus local practical training - should be used to deliver an accessible and effective National Induction Programme.
