OECD Survey on Drivers of Trust in Public Institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean 2025 Results

Year: 2025
Type: book
Abstract: In the face of challenging conditions, governments in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) remain committed to delivering better outcomes for their citizens. Public trust in government is critical to these efforts. This report presents the main findings of the OECD's first Trust Survey in LAC. It illustrates levels of trust in different public institutions and explores how people’s experiences with, and expectations of, government influence trust. These expectations range from day‑to‑day interactions with public institutions to government decision making on complex policy issues. The survey, conducted in ten countries in 2023 and 2025, is the first regional exercise under the OECD’s Global Trust Survey Project. In many ways, trust dynamics in LAC mirror those observed across OECD countries. Yet, average levels of trust tend to be lower in LAC than in the OECD, and perceptions of government decision making on complex policy issues more strongly influence trust in LAC. While each country’s result reflects its unique circumstances, the findings in this report illustrate shared regional trends and offer a foundation for policy action to strengthen governance and public trust in the region.
