Transforming Chronic Wound Management through Co-Design and Digital Innovation: ICAREWOUNDS Study

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Introduction Chronic wounds (CW) represent a global healthcare challenge, due to its financial burden and complex treatment protocol. ICAREWOUNDS study, funded by European Commission under Horizon Europe, aims to develop and validate a patient-centric digital platform integrating novel e-health solutions. This platform will utilise trustworthy artificial intelligence technologies to capture wound images, employ deep learning algorithms for automatic extraction of CW features and facilitate decision support to healthcare professionals. Project is in its prototype development phase, which will undergo evaluation via usability and feasibility study. This abstract outline development of ICAREWOUNDS integrated care (IC) model in Ireland to aid digital platform advancement. Methods IC model was developed using co-design methodology, combining expert input with local needs for spinal cord injury patients with pressure injuries in Ireland. Stakeholder mapping (n = 12) and co-design workshop (n = 13) were conducted at National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) Dublin, aimed to facilitate iterative feedback, addressing needs of patients, gathering expertise from various stakeholders. Results Workshops accentuated critical challenges in CW management, including high staff turnover in acute hospitals, deficiency of tissue viability information in nursing curriculum. This has been exacerbated by lack of adequate tissue viability nursing services at Irish community level. There is no technological integration in CW management at NRH. Extended integration of healthcare services, resource constraints, and reduced staffing were also classified as compounding challenges. Conclusions This project represents a significant advancement in digital, patient-centric CW care. It empowers healthcare professionals, standardises treatment, facilitates efficient health service delivery, and improves quality of life of patients while promoting sustainable, cost-effective healthcare delivery across Europe. Key messages • ICAREWOUNDS project will set a new benchmark for digital, patient-centred chronic wound care. • ICAREWOUNDS project will empower clinicians by standardising care and improving care delivery, enhancing patient safety and satisfaction.
