D7.2 Health and Environmental Indicators with Data for Traditional and Alternative-Protein Based Diets
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This document contains a description of the health and environmental indicators and data for traditional and alternative proteins (Deliverable 7.2), which relates to Task 7.2 of Work Package (WP) 7. The deliverable consists of two main sections namely Health And Environmental Indicators and Data Collection On Indicators. The established indicators and collected data will be used in the upcoming WP7 Tasks to estimate the impacts of the dietary shift on Health and Environment dimensions (Task 7.3, Deliverable 7.3) and eventually optimize it (Task 7.4). The section Health and Environmental Indicators addresses the procedure for the identification of indicators for each of the two primary dimensions impacting the dietary shifts as related to Health and Environment. A set of indicators has been established for each dimension to give consideration to all the relevant aspects. For each dimension, impact groups have been identified. The impact groups of Health are: safety requirements, allergenicity awareness, and nutritional health of proteins while for the Environment the environmental impact was included as impact group. The established indicators are as follows: chemical contamination and microbial contamination for the safety impact group, presence of allergenic protein, potential of cross-reactivity and history of sensitization for allergenicity awareness, nutrient quality and protein quality for nutritional health, and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs), blue water use (WU) and land use (LU) for environmental impact. This list has been adjusted from the one presented in Milestone 16 (M 12) to better align with the measurement criteria chosen for each indicator; the differences are also outlined in this section. The section Data Collection on Indicators describes the criteria for data collection and the procedures that will be followed to obtain data for the selected indicators. Protein sources (traditional and alternative) to be included have been selected from the project selection i.e., exploratory, short and long lists. The main criteria for data collection are the primary use of European (standardized) data from available databases and information generated within GIANT LEAPS. Based on data availability, scientific publications along with expert interviews will be used to supplement the collection. The data sources identified so far and the preliminary availability of information for each protein source are provided in this report. The last section in this report presents the challenges for estimating the impact of the foreseen dietary shift on health and the environment, as planned in WP7, and their possible solutions. The challenges relate to the different levels to which the alternative proteins are assessed in Giant Leaps: the raw protein sources (1st level), the derived protein products such as isolates and concentrates (2nd level), the foods as eaten (3rd level), and the overarching diet level (4th level). Specifically, with regard to indicators, the aim is to define indicators applicable to all levels, so this section targets levels 1st to 4th. Instead, data collection aims at obtaining data at the food level, so it targets levels 1st to 3rd. The following tasks in WP7 will target only the 4th level, since the overall objective is to evaluate future diets (Task 7.3) and optimize dietary shifts (Task 7.4). Moving across levels brings challenges both in the creation of a reliable and comprehensive indicator framework and in the data collection activities. These challenges and their possible solutions are described in this report.
