The Enduring Mischiefs of Faction: Joseph Addison's the Mischiefs of Party Spirit and Its Relevance to Contemporary Political Polarization

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Joseph Addison’s 1711 essay “The Mischiefs of Party Spirit,” first published in The Spectator, critiques the corrosive effects of political factionalism on social harmony and civic virtue. Written during a period of intense Whig–Tory conflict in early eighteenth-century Britain, Addison’s reflections remain strikingly relevant in today’s polarized political landscape. This article situates Addison’s essay within its historical milieu, analyzes its rhetorical strategies and moral philosophy, and explores its contemporary resonance for democracies grappling with ideological fragmentation, digital echo chambers, and the erosion of public trust. Through close textual reading and engagement with modern scholarship on political partisanship, the study underscores the enduring value of Addison’s call for moderation, civility, and collective well-being.
