When Markets Think Like Machines: Why India Plays by Different Rules

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This essay explores how financial markets increasingly resemble machine-learning systems. It contrasts Wall Street’s high-speed, data-labeled “supervised learning” behavior with Dalal Street’s slower, feedback-based “reinforcement learning” approach. Each market adapts to information differently—one through rapid error correction, the other through gradual reinforcement. Drawing from real market data and 2025 volatility patterns, the paper argues that liquidity, policy, and investor psychology function as variables within a shared adaptive model. Both markets reveal how financial ecosystems learn, mislearn, and overfit—mirroring artificial intelligence itself. The analysis highlights the importance of recalibrating model sensitivities and weightages to reflect dynamic environments, offering a new framework for understanding how global markets evolve as learning systems.
