Nanotechnology in Civil Engineering: Advancing Construction Materials for Sustainable and Smart Infrastructure
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Nanotechnology has emerged as a cutting-edge area of scientific innovation, finding extensive applications across multiple engineering disciplines. In civil engineering, it has proven to be a game-changer by significantly enhancing the properties and performance of construction materials. The incorporation of nanomaterials into concrete, steel, asphalt, and other building components has led to improvements in strength, durability, resistance to wear, and sustainability. These advancements not only extend the life span of infrastructures but also support the development of smart materials with self-cleaning or self-healing capabilities. This review paper examines the critical role of nanotechnology in transforming civil engineering practices, with a focus on its contributions to construction material innovation. It also discusses the key challenges hindering its large-scale adoption, including cost constraints, manufacturing complexity, and safety concerns. By addressing these barriers, nanotechnology holds the potential to redefine construction methodologies and create more resilient, eco-friendly infrastructure for the future.
