Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the intricate relationship between security and sustainability in Europe, highlighting how the continent’s historical experiences, governance structures, and socio-economic systems inform its pursuit of long-term resilience. Through comparative analysis of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and the Nordic states, the paper traces how European nations have evolved policy responses that balance protection, productivity, and sustainability amid ongoing global challenges. Drawing from post-war reconstruction efforts to contemporary crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, the study reveals that Europe’s approach to resilience is shaped by an enduring commitment to both human and environmental security. By analyzing frameworks like the European Green Deal, EU Climate Law, and Strategic Compass for Security and Defence, the paper demonstrates how institutional innovation and collective governance underpin Europe’s quest for sustainable stability. Ultimately, the article argues that Europe’s future depends on maintaining a balanced nexus between security, environmental protection, economic stability, and social cohesion, a model offering lessons for global governance and sustainable development.
