Chipped stone from central Macedonia, Greece: The lessons of the Anthemous Valley Archaeological Project (AVAP, 2010–2015)
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The Anthemous Valley Archaeological Project (AVAP) is a joint Greek and Polish research initiative devoted to the systematic study of the prehistory of an important region of southeast Europe. The project involves intensive surface surveys and several kinds of geoarchaeological research. Preliminary findings have been presented in an extensive report (2016) and numerous shorter publications. Many additional studies are currently in preparation. The article discusses the finds of lithic items recorded during the AVAP surface survey. Forty-four pieces are illustrated, and their technical features are briefly described. The vast majority of those pieces were found at sites with a significant Neolithic component. Limonite, a locally available rock, is the primary material used for chipped stone tools, although raw materials including flint from more distant sources are also represented in the AVAP collection.
