The Sixteen Samskara: a Philosophical and Cultural Analysis of Hindu Rites of Passage
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The Sixteen Samskara are a series of Hindu rites of passage marking significant transitions in an individual’s life, from conception to death. Rooted in Vedic and Smṛti traditions, these rituals serve not only as religious observances but also as instruments for moral, cultural, and spiritual refinement. This paper examines the historical origins, ritual procedures, and philosophical foundations of the Samskara, highlighting their role in shaping individual character and fostering social cohesion. Through an analysis of classical texts and modern interpretations, the study explores how these rituals continue to influence Hindu identity while adapting to contemporary social contexts. It argues that the enduring relevance of the Samskara lies in its capacity to integrate spiritual ideals with everyday life, thus sustaining a sense of continuity between tradition and modernity.
