Trump vs. Tylenol: Psychology, Politics, and the "Social Pain" Factor

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines why US President Donald Trump has targeted acetaminophen (Tylenol®) in public statements and explores psychological research suggesting acetaminophen can blunt emotional (social) pain. In September 2025 Trump held a press conference claiming that taking Tylenol during pregnancy raises the risk of autism (a claim medical experts quickly debunked). This piece analyses possible political and psychological motives behind this unusual warning, including the idea that acetaminophen’s emotional effects might blunt the social grievances that fuel extremist movements. It considers whether this “social analgesic” effect could intersect with Trump’s political strategy, and situates the episode in the broader context of propaganda and disinformation.
