Intersentient States: A Foundational Note

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Intersentient States introduces a new concept in artistic research: the idea that artworks, materials, and perceivers can momentarily share a field of awareness. Developed through years of work in both science and ceramics, the note proposes that certain artefacts act not as static results but as participants in perception - forms that 'seem' to listen, remember, and respond. Drawing on ideas of material agency and relational aesthetics, it situates this phenomenon within a wider tradition of artists and thinkers concerned with how matter shapes perception and presence. The text also reflects on the creative process itself as a dialogue between matter, maker, and mind. Published as an open-access foundational note, it establishes authorship and conceptual priority for the term Intersentient States, with further visual material to follow.
