Aspects on the Urbanization of Bihor County in the Communist Period (ii): Marghita and Salonta

Abstract: Urban development in the communist period is a vast subject, researched by many scholarsfrom all over the World. During that time, after WWII and till 1989-1991, Eastern European citieswere developed by massive industrialization, the regime’s policy aiming to uniformize urbanliving. This happened also in Romania and Bihor County. Besides Oradea, which was the county’scapital, other cities were developed and grew, and also new towns were created, even fromscratch. In this paper we will see the case of a commune transformed into a city (Marghita) andthat of an existing city in the beginning of the communist period, that also grew, Salonta, aimingat specific urban developments, industrialization, housing and public services.
