Induction ultrafast sintering

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Induction ultrafast sintering (IUS) capable of rapidly densifying various refractory materials is demonstrated through two facile, contactless modalities: direct IUS (d-IUS), where heating of the sample arises from direct coupling with the applied electromagnetic field vs. susceptor IUS (s-IUS), where the sample is heated indirectly through an induction-heated metal case. Ultrahigh heating rates ranging from ~75 to >450 °C/s and an ultrahigh temperature capability of >2500 °C can be readily achieved. Both d-IUS and s-IUS can densify molybdenum in 120 s to high densities (with only ~1-3% porosities detected by image analyses). In addition, 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3YSZ) was sintered to ~97% relative densities in 30 s via s-IUS. Finally, a difficult-to-sinter refractory NbMoTaW-(Nb0.37Mo0.11Ta0.39W0.13)2C composite was densified by d-IUS at ~2000 °C for 120 s to achieve a ~94-96% relative density. This IUS platform provides an innovative route towards high-throughput materials discovery and energy-saving fabrication of bulk refractory materials.
