THE ROLE OF LISTENING EXERCiSES IN DEVELOPING PRONUNCIATION AND FLUENCY
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: : Listening tasks are acknowledged as crucial elements in fostering accurate pronunciation and fluent speech in second language learners. This research investigates how systematically designed listening activities contribute to improved pronunciation and speaking fluency. Through a thematic analysis of 25 empirical and theoretical studies, the study identifies three primary categories of listening exercises — intensive, extensive and interactive — and examines their distinct roles in supporting oral production. Findings reveal that specific tasks like shadowing and phoneme discrimination significantly enhance pronunciation precision, while broad exposure to authentic spoken English accelerates fluency by boosting speech speed and minimizing pauses. The evidence underlines the importance of a well-rounded incorporation of diverse listening practices in language instruction to promote overall speaking proficiency. The study concludes by discussing pedagogical applications and suggesting avenues for further research.
