Telling Geodesy Stories for Maximum Impact
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Our science is not finished until it is communicated and engaged with. For our science to have impact and be useful there is a necessity to make it understandable and accessible – not only to our peers, but also the general public and those with power and influence to drive change. The tailored messaging about how we communicate our science is highly dependent on the audience and what is trying to be achieved. Sometimes it is far easier to complete our research, publish the results and consider our work concluded. This presentation will provide some examples of successful science communication within the Australian Government, focused on gaining targeted investment in geodesy and positioning applications. It will walk through the strategies used, reflections on the experience, consultative feedback, and some perspectives on geodesy outreach in general. By sharing these insights, we aim to highlight the importance of effective communication in advancing the field of geodesy and fostering greater public and political support for this critical science. By exploring the art of telling geodesy stories for maximum impact, and sharing how innovative communication strategies can enhance the visibility and appreciation of geodetic science, we hope to reach across diverse audiences.
