Historical Research in Nigeria: Digital Transformation, Challenges, and Prospects
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study, titled “Modern Historical Scholarship in Nigeria: Digital Age, Challenges, and the Quest for Prospects,” examines the impact of the digital age on contemporary historical scholarship in Nigeria, with particular reference to historiographical research methods, teaching, and learning. The study explores how modern educational technologies have transformed the academic life of historians, scholars, and students, enhancing the digitization of historical research and fostering new trends in intellectual engagement. Drawing on a range of primary and secondary sources, the research highlights the role of technological advancements in the emergence of a new class of highly philosophical-minded intelligentsia and scholars. It also notes the revival of modern historical thought, including the rise of diverse schools of historical philosophy and the prominence of intellectual frameworks such as Postmodernism, Formalism, and Structuralism. Despite these positive contributions, the study identifies several challenges hindering the full realization of digital-age benefits, including inadequate institutional support, neurological and physiological effects of prolonged technology use, drug abuse, and insufficient moral and financial backing. The paper concludes that while modern technologies offer immense prospects for historical scholarship, addressing these impediments is essential to fully harness their transformative potential for research, teaching, and learning in Nigeria.
