Advancements and Challenges in Bioenergy Integratio Nwitidn Renewable Energy Systems

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper offers a thorough examination of bioenergy incorporation in hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES), emphasizing its capacity to improve energy resilience, sustainability, and operational efficiency. A narrative literature review methodology was utilized, following systematic search protocols across Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Ninety peer-reviewed articles published from 2020 to 2024 were chosen according to inclusion criteria addressing technical breakthroughs, environmental implications, economic viability, and regulatory frameworks. Data were thematically classified and analyzed by qualitative synthesis, with bias risk evaluated using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) instrument. The review presents a two-row flow taxonomy that includes feedstock sources, conversion paths, energy carriers, and end-use sectors. It emphasizes progress in anaerobic digestion, biomass gasification, and biofuel generation, as well as the incorporation of smart grid technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT). Identified key problems encompass feedstock variability, supply chain inefficiencies, elevated manufacturing costs, and fragmented policy frameworks. Environmental issues, including land-use competition and lifecycle emissions, are rigorously analyzed. Case studies from Denmark, Sweden, and Germany illustrate effective bioenergy implementation approaches. The assessment concludes by delineating future research avenues, promoting sustainable feedstock options, integrating carbon capture, and pushing for unified policy support to enhance bioenergy's contribution to low-carbon energy objectives and circular economy principles.
