Diversity-Responsive Education: A Vision and Approach for Powerful Learning for Every Student
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACTIn this text we develop an integrated framework for diversity-responsive education. Diversity-responsive education starts from the observation that diversity is a reality in every classroom and offers added value for learning and for society. Diversity is broadly understood here as the myriad human differences—in background, identity, learning pace, language and talent—but always placing this complex concept of diversity in relation to social power dynamics and inequality. Education unavoidably engages with this diversity, and this engagement is never neutral: education can help maintain, strengthen or reduce inequalities. To create maximal learning and development opportunities for all students, diversity-responsive education therefore asks educational professionals for a conscious, reflective and purposeful stance. In this text we outline what diversity-responsive education means, why it is essential in our society, and how it can be given concrete form in educational practice (i.e., in terms of mindset, pedagogy and partnerships). We conclude that diversity-responsive education is not an additional task, but the core of quality education. Here, diversity becomes a strength that enriches the learning of every student — a key to education that is genuinely of and for everyone. The resource is available in English and Dutch within a single document.
