Abstract: This study examined attitudes and perceptions of IT administrators toward wireless network usage and its security, as well as the security risk assessment and management practices adopted in public tertiary institutions in Bauchi State. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was employed, targeting 223 IT administrators across eight state and federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Using Taro Yamane’s formula, a sample size of 139 was determined and selected through stratified sampling to ensure representation across staff categories. Data were collected using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics were applied to analyze attitudes and perceptions, while chi-square tests assessed the relationship between compliance with best practices and institutional security measures. Findings revealed that IT administrators widely use wireless networks and are strongly aware of the associated risks. Although network security was perceived as highly important, confidence in existing safeguards remained moderate, reflecting a gap between awareness and effective protection. Risk assessment practices were fairly common; however, significant gaps were noted in training, regular audits, and compliance with best practices. Statistical analysis confirmed that compliance is strongly associated with the presence of formal security protocols, routine audits, and adherence to baseline technical standards. The study recommends that public tertiary institutions strengthen wireless security by institutionalizing regular training, enforcing formal security protocols, and conducting periodic audits. Greater investment in protective measures and adherence to recognized standards will enhance network resilience and reduce vulnerability to threats.
