The Mozambique Mountain Initiative: Safeguarding Mozambique's Unique Montane Ecosystems

Year: 2025

Type: article

Abstract: In Mozambique, mountain ecosystems are largely rare, unprotected sites of high biodiversity value and yet provide essential ecosystem services to the local and national economy. At the 2nd Southern African Mountain Conference (SAMC2025) in March 2025, a multidisciplinary team of Mozambican conservation practitioners initiated a program to place Mozambican mountains more prominently on the national agenda, as well as to position the country for stronger mountain transboundary collaboration and partnerships. The Mozambique Mountain Initiative seeks to drive a national research policy and practice program that will see the sustainable use and conservation of Mozambique's unique mountain ecosystems.
