The significance of Circadian Rhythms in Regulating Immune Function and its Implications for Autoimmune Diseases

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Circadian rhythms are endogenous; near-24-hour biological cycles that regulate diverse physiological processes, including immune function. These rhythms, orchestrated by central and peripheral molecular clocks, profoundly influence immune system dynamics, including leukocyte trafficking, cytokine secretion, and adaptive immune responses. Disruption of circadian rhythms, whether through genetic mutations, environmental influences, or lifestyle factors, has been increasingly implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. This review explores the intricate relationship between circadian biology and immune regulation, focusing on its role in autoimmune disease progression. We discuss emerging strategies, including chronotherapy, lifestyle modifications, and novel therapeutic targets, that leverage circadian principles to improve autoimmune disease management.
