Transfer and Collaborative Knowledge Generation: Practice, Competencies, and Emergence
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The video Transfer and Collaborative Knowledge Generation: Practice, Competencies, and Emergence explores how knowledge and technology transfer can be understood and enacted as collaborative, emergent processes. Building on theoretical models of knowledge generation and innovation, it distinguishes between simple, complicated, and complex systems of cooperation and collaboration. Whereas cooperation relies on the coordinated contribution of independent actors, collaboration entails a deeper transformation through the confrontation and integration of diverse perspectives. Empirical findings from a study of 200 companies in the German engineering industry illustrate the competencies required for successful collaborative transfer that range from systems thinking and interdisciplinary communication to adaptive learning and reflexive responsibility. The presentation argues that collaborative transfer is an emergent phenomenon, one that has the potential to be greater than the sum of its parts, and that cultivats such processes requires both individual and organisational capability building.
