Intergenerational Pathways: Designing Intergenerational Spaces to Enhance Mental Health and Wellbeing
Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: This thesis explores the intersection of architecture, intergenerational connections, and mental health. With an aging population and increasing demand for daycare services, there is a critical need to create environments that foster meaningful interactions between children and older adults. By integrating daycare facilities and elderly housing units, this research aims to reduce social isolation and enhance emotional well-being across generations. Existing literature highlights the positive effects of intergenerational interactions on mental health and well-being. However, there is limited research on how architectural design can support these interactions. This thesis aims to fill that gap by proposing design frameworks that promote intergenerational engagement through spatial configurations, shared common areas, outdoor spaces, and technology-enabled interventions. Through a comprehensive literature review, case studies, and design proposals guided by environmental psychology and human-centered design principles, this study seeks to create architectural solutions that foster emotional resilience, reduce loneliness, and enhance community integration. This research advocates for reimagining architectural design through a human-centric lens that prioritizes intergenerational connections and social well-being.
