Abstract: Women are known to be the backward and deprived section of society. Gender inequality is a major issue across the world. The Government of India has consistently launched policies and programmes to empower women and promote gender equality through education, employment, health and participation in governance. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine the various programmes and schemes for economic, social and political empowerment in India. The study has followed the documentary analysis method. This study is purely qualitative in nature. Data for the present study has been collected from government reports, various books, research papers, doctoral theses, national and international magazines, state reports, newspapers, websites, etc.
