Inter-Ethnocultural Fatalism: A Conceptual Framework for Understanding Enoch Powell's Social Outlook in the Rivers of Blood Speech
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This working paper introduces and defines the new academic term Inter-Ethnocultural Fatalism, a conceptual framework proposed to more precisely analyse Enoch Powell’s 1968 Rivers of Blood speech. The term describes the belief that social, demographic, or political outcomes between different ethnic or cultural groups are viewed as inevitable due to collective identity rather than individual agency. The paper argues that existing labels such as “cultural racism” fail to capture the fatalistic, deterministic dimension of Powell’s rhetoric. By applying the concept to Powell’s speech, the article demonstrates how Inter-Ethnocultural Fatalism provides a clearer and more analytically accurate explanation of his worldview. This publication is intended as a formal introduction of the concept into the academic record and is made available through Zenodo to ensure public accessibility, traceability, and DOI-based attribution.
