International Marketing Strategy Adaptation or Standardisation?

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In an increasingly globalized marketplace, multinational firms are constantly confronted with the strategic dilemma of whether to standardize or adapt their international marketing strategies. While standardization allows for global consistency, efficiency, and economies of scale, adaptation allows an organization to respond to cultural, social, and regulatory distinctives among national markets. This report provides a critical overview of the ongoing debate surrounding international marketing strategy through a literature review in which key theoretical foundations, empirical evidence, and context can all influence firms’ strategic insiders’ decision-making. Integrated works, typing key authors’ (Levitt, 1983; Vrontis and Thrassou, 2007; Mandler et al. (2021) and Hultman and Oghazi, 2024) enable depth of consideration of how global firms balance standardization and adaptation to optimize performance. It is argued that this contingent, "glocal" strategy (or blend) have standardization around core aspects of the marketing mix supplemented with adaptation to targeted audiences and local markets. The report concludes by offering managerial insights for international firms aiming to balance global integration with local responsiveness.
